The Clothier sculpture, New Walk, Leicester
This sculpture by John Atkin was commissioned by the Friends of New Walk, at a cost of around £30,000. It was unveiled in 2010, and stands near the New Walk Bridge, over Waterloo Way. One of the plaques attached to the plinth usefully explains “This John Atkin sculpture celebrates the contribution of the Clothing Industry to the prosperity of the City and County of Leicester”. Unfortunately, in recent decades a lot of that prosperity has drained away, as most of the clothes which were once made in Leicester are manufactured in cheap labor countries.
