Sculpture Declares the Space Around It | John Atkin
Public sculpture is a great challenge for any artist. The work must appeal to an extraordinary range of people of diverse opinions on art and its public role. English sculptor John Atkin’s recent project entitled Access to Justice took four years of meetings and many visual concepts in the making before the Law Society of Upper Canada selected his sculpture for a “prime location bridging Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square and University Avenue, via the pedestrianized promenade of McMurtry Gardens of Justice.” by Ian Findlay

John Atkin: Corby Railway Sculpture Project
"My intention is to fabricate the large.scale artwork in stainless steel in order to capture the modem environment to of the railway station, and to use polished surfaces to reflect No the movement of passengers and visitors to the station. I also want the sculpture to be a celebration of Corby's renewal over the many decades of rebuilding since the 1980's, when its industty and identity were brought to an abrupt halt."

The Sculpture Agency: John Atkin's astrolable unveiled in Beijing
This new large-scale work (right) by Darlington-based British sculptor John Atkin (FRBS) has just been
unveiled at the Ordos City Sculpture Park in China. The work — entitled The Road Not Taken — is modelled on a mariner's astrolabe. John was originally inspired by the marine instruments he'd encountered at the Shipwreck Museum in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight where he made several drawings. "I was fascinated with how objects reflect our history and geographical location," he says.

A British Triumph
Even before this month's opening ceremony unfolds in Beijing, we have cause to celebrate
a great British success at the Olympics. It has been achieved in the artistic arena rather than the sporting one, but it is no less huge for that and it is English sculptor John Atkin whom we should place high on the podium and applaud for bringing fame to the nation.

Spirit of the Olympics
Even before it has started Kingston has already scored a gold at the Beijing Olympics. Kingston resident, John Atkin, a former Stanley Picker Fellow, has won an international competition with his work 'Strange Meeting', a 27-ton marble and granite carving, now on permanent exhibition in the Olympic Park. With 2,600 worldwide submissions, the jury whittled it down to just 26 and awarded to John, the only Briton to pass their scrutiny, an outstanding award.

The Hot Seat
Artist and academic John Atkin builds bridges in China
Achievements everything I have been doing in China stems from the 2008 Olympic Park Cultural Olympiad. My 27-ton marble and granite sculpture “Strange Meeting” was selected from an open field of 2,600 applicants for an exhibition exploring the theme “One World, One Dream.” The artwork’s success and critical acclaim has introduced my output to a wider audience in China. This allowed me to become involved in cultural initiatives such
as the Changchun Sculpture Symposium.
